According to the New York Times, NYC is in a housing crisis, in large part because demand for rental housing drastically exceeds demand. More than 1/3 of renters must spend more than 50% of their income on rent.

Property owners say higher rents remain necessary to pay excessive property taxes and out-of-control expenses for utilities and maintenance.

All of this adds up to more and more roommates sharing fewer and fewer rooms.
