Detroit roommates need more bang for their bucks

July 27, 2026

Unfortunately, Detroit ranked worst on WalletHub’s Best & Worst Places to Rent in America.

It was dead last overall.

This poor rating was based on Detroit’s ranking as one of the very worst their Affordable Rentals ranking, while also being dead last on Overall Rank. (Overall Rank was based on 21 different rental market metrics, including rental vacancy rate, sublet laws, and square footage, along with general affordability and several Quality of Life scores.

This does actually mean that Detroit is . . . not great in terms of rental bang for your buck, at least according to their aggregated ranking system. And we’re not disputing them.

Everybody knows Detroit has struggled. Just not working well, not affordable rentals, not ratios!

But if you’re going to go ahead and live there anyway, possibly with a roommate to combat those poor rental ratios: find a roommate in Detroit.
